Urological Symptoms You Should Never Ignore
Many urological conditions are benign and easily managed. Some are early signs of serious disease. Knowing the difference requires expert assessment — and early assessment consistently leads to better outcomes.
Blood in Urine (Haematuria)
Visible blood in the urine (frank haematuria) requires urgent investigation even if it occurs only once. It may indicate bladder cancer, kidney cancer, kidney stones or infection. The NICE guideline recommends investigation within 2 weeks. Microscopic haematuria — blood detected only on a dipstick test — also warrants assessment in men, and in women over 60 or with risk factors. Do not wait for a second episode.
Urinary Symptoms in Men
Difficulty passing urine, a weak stream, needing to strain, feeling of incomplete emptying, urgency or frequency are collectively called lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These are most commonly caused by benign prostate enlargement (BPH) but can also indicate prostate cancer, bladder dysfunction or urethral stricture. A urological assessment with flow rate, bladder scan and, where appropriate, PSA testing will determine the cause and guide management.
Kidney and Ureteric Stones
Kidney stones cause severe loin-to-groin pain (renal colic) when they obstruct the ureter. Most small stones (under 5mm) pass spontaneously with adequate fluid intake and pain management. Larger stones, or those causing obstruction, infection or persistent pain, require active treatment. Options include shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy with laser fragmentation and, for large complex stones, PCNL (keyhole surgery to the kidney). Metabolic assessment and dietary modification reduce the risk of recurrence.
What Investigations Does a Urologist Arrange?
Rapid, accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective urological care. Mr Ameen has access to same-day or next-day diagnostics at all clinic locations.
Imaging
CT Urogram — the gold-standard scan for haematuria investigation, showing the kidneys, ureters and bladder in detail. Identifies stones, tumours and structural abnormalities.
Ultrasound — used for bladder assessment, kidney evaluation, scrotal conditions and post-void residual urine measurement. No radiation.
MRI — multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) is the most accurate non-invasive test for prostate cancer assessment and is arranged for all patients with elevated PSA or abnormal prostate examination.
Clinical tests
Flexible cystoscopy — a camera examination of the bladder and urethra under local anaesthetic gel, typically performed in clinic. Essential for the investigation of haematuria, recurrent infections and urinary symptoms. Takes approximately 10 minutes.
Uroflowmetry & bladder scan — measures the speed and completeness of urination. Painless, non-invasive and performed at the clinic visit.
Blood and urine tests — PSA, renal function, full blood count, urine culture and cytology available same-day at most clinic locations.

Initial consultations start from £350. Follow-up appointments from £200. All investigations and procedures are quoted separately and transparently before any commitment. There are no hidden fees. Health insurance
Mr Ameen is recognised by all major UK insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Cigna, Vitality and WPA. Please confirm your outpatient benefit with your insurer before booking. A GP referral letter is usually required for insured patients. The clinic team can assist with pre-authorisation enquiries.

Yes. All consultations, outpatient procedures and operations are performed by Mr Torath Ameen personally. You will not be seen by a junior doctor, specialist nurse or registrar on his behalf. Consultant-led care from first appointment to discharge is a core commitment of the practice.
Absolutely. Patients are always welcome to bring a partner, family member or friend to any consultation. Having someone with you can help with note-taking and processing information, particularly when a new diagnosis is being discussed. Please let the reception team know in advance so the consultation room is arranged accordingly.
Please bring a list of your current medications, any recent blood test or imaging results, your GP referral letter if applicable, and your insurance authorisation details if using health insurance. It is helpful to note down your symptoms — when they started, how frequent they are and any factors that make them better or worse — before your appointment.

Haematuria (Blood in Urine)
Visible or microscopic blood in the urine always warrants investigation to exclude bladder cancer, kidney stones, infection or kidney disease. Mr Ameen offers a comprehensive haematuria assessment pathway including cystoscopy, CT urogram and urine cytology.
Kidney Stones
Assessment, medical expulsion therapy, shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy and laser stone fragmentation, and PCNL for complex stones. Plus metabolic assessment and dietary advice to prevent recurrence.
Recurrent UTI
Recurrent urinary infections in men or women need investigation rather than repeated antibiotics. Mr Ameen assesses for structural abnormalities, bladder dysfunction and resistant organisms to create a long-term management strategy.
Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)
Frequency, urgency, nocturia (getting up at night), slow stream, hesitancy — assessed with flow rate testing, bladder scanning, PSA and, where appropriate, cystoscopy and urodynamics.
Overactive Bladder (OAB)
Urgency and urgency incontinence managed with lifestyle advice, bladder retraining, anticholinergic/mirabegron medication, and BOTOX® bladder injection for refractory cases.
